you thought you were hungry but you’re actually dehydrated

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong. For now, I’ll believe I’m right and I drink accordingly. I’m pregnant, you see, and things are happening to my body that I never could have imagined in either my most creative or delusional moments. One of the latest of these great wonders is feeling sick around what would be normal eating times. So much is far from normal these days that it’s easy to blame anything that seems out of place on HCG levels.

I’ve been treating my sickness with food, and mostly good food at that. (I was so sure McDonalds would be my pregnancy craving and thankfully I was very wrong.) For the most part, food helps but there have been enough times when the fix is temporary.

Somehow, in the madness, I discovered that I should be consuming more liquids. And as of yesterday, I do believe that water is the real solution which is why I would feel better longer after eating several slices of pineapple as opposed to a carb. When the sickness hit yesterday afternoon, I drank a few cups of water instead of reaching for a snack. It was almost magical.

I’ve been thirsty. I suspect you have been, too. Perhaps not a thirst that’s elevated by pregnancy but some other condition. And I suspect you’ve also been prone to thinking it’s something else and have spent good time medicating accordingly.

When you finally realize that it’s water you lack and you drink deeply, the relief is incredible. You wonder why it took you so long to figure out. You probably should have asked Someone from the start. But Google seems so much easier…

  1. thanks for this….i had been challenging myself to drink a couple of litres of water a day. this post reminds me to get back on track

  2. Congratulations on your pregnancy. You are in my prayers. Since school has been out over two weeks ago, I have not been drinking enough water–been feeling very hungry between meals. You have reminded me of the beauty in drinkiing enough water–food is a poor substitute and does not satisfy the need to hydrate. Love you.
