A Psalm for Those Who Love

A Psalm for Those Who Love

Lord, when will the ice melt?
Oh Lord, when will it be absorbed into the ground like a dog’s urine?
For centuries, the ground has been saturated with blood that never should have been shed, while ice in all its iterations remains unphased, reinforced by the cold blasts of money meant for mercy not for murder.

My heart is caught between the joyful voices of my children and the songs of resistance.
We sled down our little backyard hill and trudge happily through snow, together, while another family has run out of tears.
I lose focus, momentarily overwhelmed by what I cannot do, unable to run with what I can.
While able to sleep, I wake restless and my daydreams are scattered.

But you, Lord, have not abandoned your people to hellscapes.
You will appear brilliant and bright like a majestic sunrise over a land covered in snow.
The warmth of your light will be felt by the just as love and by the unjust as destruction.
Vanish their tear gas and jam their guns.
Freeze their steps and scramble their thoughts.
Show the wicked that you are attentive to the prayers of your people.

Those who love you will see your hand of justice,
They will yet rejoice in you, our Savior.

    1. Thank you, Lindy. I’m grateful that my words resonate. I’ve been reading the Psalms and thinking, “Ah, this (all the current awful) is what they are for!” The very words I often skipped over because they didn’t resonate, now resonate. I’m taking my cues from King David.
