What I’m currently reading

Posted on September 15, 2026September 15, 2026 by wordhabit

I’ve become one of those 5-or-more-books-at-a-time readers. How?

Sometimes I get a little bored. It’s not that the book is boring but that my initial excitement over it wanes. Not a great excuse, I know. Other times, I’ll take my children to the library so that they can return books and get new ones. As they browse the shelves of the children’s area, I’ll look at the shelves with new books or the “staff pics” displays and a book’s cover design will catch my eye. That’s how I started reading Patrice Gopo’s Autumn Song which I highly recommend, even though I’m only just over half the way through.

At the beginning of the summer, when my public library’s summer reading program kicked off, my children and I went to the library to sign up. Adults could participate this summer and as a bonus for signing up, we, like the children, could choose a free book. I chose Susan Cain’s Bittersweet. I’m not sure if I’m half way through. It is a longer book than Gopo’s, to be fair (ha!). A surprisingly lovely read, surprisingly because I didn’t expect to enjoy a conversation around this particular topic.

A few days ago, I had a massive “ah ha” regarding some research and writing ideas and began reading Dallas Willard’s The Great Omission and then stumbled upon Savannah Guthrie’s Mostly What God Does. That probably happened because the title is so similar to a book I picked off my shelf after many years and started reading to my children in the evening called Love Does by Bob Goff.

Meanwhile, I haven’t finished Constructing an Incarnational Theology by Samuel Wells which I started in…March?

Anyway, read away. I’ve not linked any books to vendors. I’d recommend purchasing from a local bookstore, even though it’s a bit more than others. You may find your local vendor on bookshop(dot)org.
